Poetry…DESCRIBING my life?! OMGZ

As much as I’m really, REALLY sick of poetry, I actually cited this passage from The Wasteland in my final essay, and I thought it fitting for my final moments as a Brock student.

 She turns and looks a moment in the glass,

Hardly aware of her departed lover;

Her brain allows one half-formed thought to pass:

“Well now that’s done: and I’m glad it’s over.”

When lovely woman stoops to folly and

Paces about her room again, alone,

She smoothes her hair with automatic hand,

And puts a record on the gramophone. (Eliot, ll. 249-256)

Oh Brock.  Sooo, rape-ey.  Especially when you try to jerk me around in paying my exorbitantly high library fees.  And kind of anticlimactic too.  Either way, it’s a pretty cool poem.

And now, I do believe I’m going to dare picking up a book to read for pleasure.

    Library fines are awful. I’ve discovered that if you looked panicked enough (I’m talking verge of tears panic) they sometimes feel sorry for you and cut you a bit of a break.

    This knowledge is useless to you now.

    By the by, Your blog is entertaining good fun. How do I go about linking it to mine? Is it too early in the blog-relationship for that?

    Steve, this is in response to the comment you left on Erin’s blog concerning the defacement of the book. I’m not sure I agree with you. While he/she is certainly entitled to express their frustration with a text or a work, to what end? Yes, this person is angry that they have been required to purchase a text and respond to it, but they are the ones that made the choice of enrolling into an upper educational system and that particular course. I have no problem with someone voicing their dislike of a text or a work of art or anything in that regard. I’m all for civil liberty and the right to express one’s self. But to do so in the manner that this person did is quite disgusting. There are more critical ways to relate distaste. This person could have raised these issues in seminar, or expressed them with the Professor. But instead, random commentary about the author and how stupid the poet is and how this is a piece of shit work, well I just don’t see what that achieves other than a release of negative energy, which I guess is something, but it seems rather wasted to me. Your thoughts?
