The Union STOCK-yaaarrrrd

If in three years I don’t like Toronto anymore, I’m moving to Chicago and setting up shop there.  My first and only visit to Chicago convinced me that it was pretty much everything that Toronto could and should be, the bigger, badder, sexier version of Toronto (kind of the same way you could compare Ottawa to D.C, if you really wanted to.  I’m not sure how well THAT comparison works, but an argument could be made for it).

My Chicago mania exists for a number of reasons:

  • The food, both the stuff I had myself and from what else I’ve heard, is excellent.  I had hoped to write a sausage review for Travis, but there were sadly fewer sausage outlets within the close-knit range I was hoping for.  A proper analysis would have taken at least a week, time that I did not have.
  • I really like seeing, and walking past, the Tribune and Sun-Times buildings.
  • It’s a required stop for any touring band.  Close enough to the east coast to be included on THOSE tours, and close enough to the mid-west to be included in THOSE tours.  And doesn’t it feel like nearly every band comes from either Chicago, Liverpool or Brooklyn these days?  Has it always been like that?
  • The city has a reputation for badassery that far exceeds the increasingly metro-ized New York.  No offense to New York, it’s a fun city too.
  • It’s where The AV Club is based.
  • It’s where Batman Begins was shot.
  • It snows there.

I must return.

I have to agree with you brother. My visit there last year also had me in love with the Windy City. I mean WILCO!! Do I need to really say more. Well there’s architecture, and an entire city that supports the arts: theatre, the visual, sound, etc.

If I had the money, and if I could tolerate the U.S. political ethos, I might consider moving back to that one city. Cheers.
