Whats black and white and hipster all over?

What's black and white and hipster all over?

Part of me scoffs at Penguin‘s new line of retrofitted bestsellers, because it’s one of those simple (read: nearly monochromatic), elegant (read: single, identifiable logo), and kitschy (a gross orange, and unashamedly old-school in appearance) design jobs that is so clearly intended to appeal to those 20-somethings that, like, really appreciate a good typeface and a balanced color scheme (I know a few of them).

But I can’t scoff, because really, they look friggin’ wicked.

Wants.

Disclaimer: Photo is taken from the Penguin website, but links back to it so nyah nyah.  Also, no offense intended to my dear design pals.  I’m saddened to see that three of those four links were more or less DOA at the time of this posting. What gives?

They’re nice. Nice, proper use of Gill Sans, which is a lovely type.

Still, I don’t like this. Some of those books are classic pieces of literature and have classic designs to go along with them. While it’s intelligent, elegant branding, it doesn’t really do anything for me.

But Gill Sans. Real nice. It’s the new Helvetica.

On the AmazonUK site, they sell mugs for particular books in the original cover image.

About Upper Lip

It's mostly a collection of sweet links and copious amounts of talk talk talk. I like it more and more every day. And yes, even the ugly blue/green color scheme is not without a certain charm.
